THEN: UC Irvine’s distinctive architecture has long attracted Hollywood filmmakers. Most memorably, Anteaters rubbed (hairy) elbows with costumed cast members during the shooting of “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” (1972). The futuristic look of the Social Sciences Tower – a style called Brutalism – provided fitting backdrop for some of the scenes.
NOW: Set design for “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which opened July 11, goes for post-apocalyptic, complete with a crumbling Golden Gate Bridge. The simian community is definitely more ape-like. The initial weekend box office numbers hit $73 million.
